Cat Litter

I’m not writing this in any particular order, just as I think about what we’ve done.
Lanzarote by comparison to many places is fairly free of rubbish. It looks as though they clean up regularly and the civic pride is noticeable.
The landscape is variable, often barren with little vegetation. Some areas the ground is like cat litter and easy to walk on, grading up to clinker and then swathes of huge distorted boulders.

We visited La Geria, the wine region with its semi circular pits where the locals dig through about 10 foot of cat litter to what I presume was the soil before the eruptions in the 1730’s. There they plant the vines they are famous for. I tasted some of the wine, I didn’t like it!

Obviously we went to Timanfaya and the volcanic region with the hoards and it is well worth it but, if you want to get up close to the lava field take a walk from El Golfo northwards. Its about 7 miles with no refreshment stops after the village, so take water and lunch. There is a rugged coastline with nothing between it and America so there are some spectacular waves. We didn’t go too far, its slow going and really we needed our boots and trousers as the rocks are very treacherous. I want to go back and hike it properly one day!
In the village we saw a small bird of prey, probably a kestrel but not sure.
After and as the sun was setting we visited Los Hervideros, a region of gloups.
