The Last Few Days

Nearly the end of our trip and it’s been lovely and something of a cathartic experience for me. Part of me wants to stay, explore some more and swim in the sea every day.

I’ve learned to use my phone, with its camera. I’ve Skyped my daughter (although it took me a while to sort it), banked on line and checked my emails.

I’ve also had time to think and ready myself for a longer adventure which is looming in the new year.

Just a few more jottings of the places we’ve been and I’m sorry if it’s a bit of a list but this is my journal after all and I don’t want to forget it.

Over one day of the days we visited Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes which are parts of the same lava tube.
The former was the first formal tourist site on Lanzarote. Designed by Cesar Manrique the surrounds have cafes and bars, swimming pool, and auditorium. The tube is exposed to the sky water in the bottom is home to little blind white crabs and the national emblem of the Island.

In the latter you have guided tour walking though the tube and its very rugged interior.Outside we saw a very fast bumble bee, out first! Anthophora alluaudi I think but not sure. It was so quick we didn’t get any pictures. We were all trying to get a good look at it flying over a Lycium Intricatum thorn bush. We must look very odd to the other tourists!
Julie and Sue saw a White digger Bee (Amegilla quadrifasciata) when walking in Playa Blanca one time and got some very funny looks from the sun worshipers as they examined it.

Another day we travelled to Teguise, lovely and unspoiled buildings dating from the 1400’s.
Then to Caleta de Famara, surfers paradise and again unspoiled fishing villiage, very windy though. Full of cyclists (that gives me an idea, not off road though as I’d probably kill myself!)

On the hottest day we went up to Femez and looked back on Playa Blanca. Here we saw Horned Dung Beetle, both male and female. After this we visited the Salinas de Janubio, in english ‘Salt Flats’. The smell of sulphur was quite horrible and we were all a bit surprised when Sue said it smells nice here! Anyway the beach was black sand glittering with salt and Olivia.
