Tasmania East Coast – Day One – Hunting for Fairies

Willow was very excited as we wandered along the beach during the evening after our tea. We passed a hole under a rock with small feathers at the entrance and an overpowering smell of guano. This she tells us is a Fairy Penguin roost.
So we’re going to sit on the rocks as night falls to watch the Penguins come in.
As it gets dark the mosquito population descend. They are so ferocious they are biting through my clothes. Not a Penguin in site and we’re being eaten alive.
Eventually Willow gives up and leads us back to the van in the dark (Thanks Barney for my head torch its been brilliant, thanks to it I have not broken my neck yet!)
Not to be deterred we start looking in the drains at the side of gardens near the harbour. A very drunk yachtsman tries to peursuade the women in our group to join him on his yacht, he tells us he’s been pecked my a penguin and bleeding to prove it! Very attractive!

Eventually we see one penguin huddled up for the night in a drain. Clearly the penguins saw the mozzy’s and came ashore somwhere else but, at least we see one.

We then make our way to to our accomodation at Freycinet Retreat. What luxury! an eco Lodge high in the hills above Freycinet.
I have a room to myself and just crash out after a quick shower. My cold now in full snotty glory, yuk!
