Tasmania East Coast – Day Two – Freycinet National Park

Waking up on this morning you could have knocked me down with a feather, the view is spectacular looking over Moulting Lagoon and Coles Bay. Its so quiet here its odd to my ears, no cars, no planes and very few bird calls.

After another healthy breakfast, ( which clearly are not working as I’m coughing and spluttering) we head to Freycinet National Park and a 5 hour walk around the Hazard, Wineglass Bay to Hazard Bay. I do not feel I have my usual energy levels but I don’t want to miss the walk. I struggle for the first part but as the climb evens out I feel better and really enjoy the walk. Wineglass Bay is like something out of a film, white white sand, calm azure sea. As we turn inland again there is a feeling of the prehistoric as we come across a dry lagoon and here we see another tiger snake, this one making away from us thankfully.

Willow tells us that many people are not aware when they have been bitten, just thinking a stick flicked up. By way of reassurance she tells us that tiger snake venom attacks the lymphatic system, so we should be ok to lay still for a few hours untill air ambulance finds us!
After this I find going to the loo in the bush a bit of a challenge!
Thankfully none of us are bitten and we head onto Hazard beach. This is wilder than Wineglass and what is amazing to me is the dune which is an ancient aboriginal midden piled high with oyster, scallop and other shells from thousands of years of use.
Over the sea a White Bellied Sea Eagle is hunting and on the beach a Christmas Beetle is shining like a jewel.

I enjoyed the walk but I’m feeling very much worse and very glad to get back to the lodge to lay down.

  1. Just tried to find out why it is called Winegalss Bay thinking what a lovely name. Read it is because the water turned red when the whaling fleets returned. If this is true it’s not the image I had in my mind. Chin chin. Hope you feel better soon.
