Australia – The Rain Forest

We have entered the jungle or rather the Rainforest proper at Daintree. We are staying at the River View Hotel, it’s basic but fabulous views of the crocodile infested river. It’s very humid as you would imagine.

The day we arrived we went on a little ferry into the region proper and out to the discovery centre which has canopy walks and various information and displays.

Later we tried walking in the rainforest proper but with all the roots it was hard going for Dad so we went to where there are boardwalks.

The rainforest comes right down to the coast which is stunning and completely empty. You can see why below.

It’s hard to see the birds here they are so secretive hiding in the thick canopy. We took an early morning tour on the river on one of the days, this was good because the driver of the little boat was an experienced birdwatcher. It rained quite a bit but we got 11 more species and I am beginning to recognise some of the birds now too.We also saw the green tree snake hanging in mangrove at shoulder height.

We didn’t see a crocodile properly just a glimpse the rest were very dangerous ‘crocologs’ or ‘logodiles’!

I saw another huge Cassowary with all the blue on its head clearly visible. I slammed on the breaks and reversed up to it but, it had melted into the forest. You would not believe a five foot bulky blue headed bird could vanish but they can!

Now while I’m writing this all the guests in our lodge have bailed out, a cyclone has hit north of here and the river rose by about 3 feet in the night. Apparently we could get flooded in, I hope not!
