Coast 9 – West and I’ll make it up as I go!

My first night camping wild. Well not exactly wild, I’ve not had to make my shelter, kill and roast a rabbit for my tea! I have a tent and a cheese and ham slice.
I’m on the beach, I’ve checked the tides, kept away from the precipitous cliff and I’m happy with my spot that has got quieter and quieter as the afternoon wore on. Currently The tent is open and I’m looking at the sea!
You probably think I’m nuts, but I wanted to see how I’d get on with a less rigid form of travel. One of the biggest issues for me is cost of accomodation and distance between stops, so this seems a viable option. I might not think so later tonight as storms are predicted. I’m sleeping in my clothes in case I have to pack up quickly eek!

I walked 10 miles today. I got the train to Lymington and as soon as I disembarked went an got an ice-cream. The lady in the shop was so lovely, she took my picture and asked where I was going, I said “West and I’ll make it up as I go”.
I walked around the Lymington and Keyhaven marshes, the sun was out and the place was full of bird watchers! These briney pools were once salt pans and the area has a history of salt production going back to the iron age apparently.
Keyhaven is near to where Hurst Castle is sat on the end of Hurst Spit and a Tudor Artillery Keep.
I could see it but I didn’t visit it today.
I confess I was worried about where to stop as the area is quite built up between Milford on sea and Bournemouth.

One of the guys from work was horrified when I told him what I was doing for this trip saying ” its so dangerous! What about those men who are SAS trianed?” Really? Ironically the only other back packer I saw today told me he’d been a Navy Seal and then went on to admire my backpack!
I’ve not bought anything new, just using what I have, or what I bought second-hand. Most of the kit I’ve got is decent having been purchased for my sons trip to Kyrgyzstan when he was 14. However if I might need to reduce the weight. 10Kg is heavy for me.

No pictures sorry, I don’t have enough data to upload them.

Anyway night night, I’ll let you know how I got on tomorrow!

  1. Day 1 seems to have gone well, Glad you didn’t have to shoot a rabbit to eat! Ice-Cream sounds much more appealing : )) sleeping in your clothes for a quick get away just incase sounds sane for you! I am sure Lee is with you in spirit but said camping and carrying a backpack was a step too far 😂. Mmm Navy Seal hey! Brush up on your Kung Fu you never know when you might need it! Sleep well and stay safe love Linda xxx

  2. Life’s a beach, huh?! The storm seems to have settled down here so I hope it does for you too … or maybe not, thunder and lightening across the coastal horizon could be spectacular viewing! Night night, be safe xx
