Thailand – Bangkok Arrival

The song One Night In Bangkok springs to mind! I know what the song was from the stage play Chess but, the feeling it is spot on!

If you don’t know it, I’ll put it on a separate post next!

We arrived before the earthquake. We sussed out the MRT (underground rail) and made it to near where we were staying. Up and out of the underground we found ourselves walking past rows and rows of Gun shops!!! Is it safe here? Does it have a gun problem? Followed by Buddha shops!

Plonking our stuff in the hotel we set off into town for food! We’re feeling brave now about experimenting!

What a place, conflicting culture, architecture and morals! Did I mention the heat? Yet somehow it all works to make this one of the most fascinating cities I’ve ever been to.

We ambled down by some of the canals and into a Temple ‘Wat Ratchabophit Sathitmahasimaram Ratchaworawihan’ (nice simple name) where there is a Royal Cemetery. My goodness it is sumptuous.

We were just trying to work out where to go when a smartly dressed man (Jack) spoke to us. He looked so happy, he told us it was his birthday and he had been granted a chance to have a philosophical conversation with a monk. We wished him congratulations and during our chat it transpired that he had studied in Berlin.

We bumped into him again after wandering around, this time with his wife and the Monk. Jack recommended we come back at 5pm for a special temple service that the public can attend, it’s rather special. He gave Tatjana his details. An auspicious day indeed!

We wandered down to a flower market!

Later we saw the sun set over Wat Arun, Thai princesses posing for photos in their loaned outfits and we had the most expensive meal we’ve had on our travels so far, £20!!!

Hmm! Not sure about the cloggies!

All set for the Astonishing place Bangkok is? It’ll take a few posts, I think!
