Taiwan – Food

You’re going to get a few posts in quick succession as I try to catch up. This one is short!

Tatjana is very curious about different foods. I seem to be interested only when I’m hungry. (Some of you will remember when I was always hungry but, that has changed with age) Anyway Tatjana’s interest has led to some interesting stops.

This one was for sugar apples, we tried two different varieties in this place. Sugar apples are a species in the Magnolia family and grow in South America and the tropics. Of the two varieties we tried here one was softer (sugar apple) with a coarse skin and the other had a firmer texture (custard apple). The flavour is for me apple/pear and they have large pips. They can be messy to eat. Tatjana and I cannot agree on it’s flavour so we’re going to have to buy another one soon!

The Magnolia family is one of the first flowering plants ever and have been around since the time of dinosaurs so these fruits are one of the first types of fruit!

In my opinion the food here is not as varied or a spicy as Thailand. A lot of noodles, and most things cooked, lots of beef, pork and fish. Green veg includes morning glory or Chinese spinach. We have had some unusual dishes like tuna and onion on a sweet waffle. The Taiwanese have a sweet tooth and a lot of the drinks are very sugary. We did enjoy the bubble teas which were first invented here!

Tuna and sweet waffle!
This was breakfast at the Star hotel, fruit, tofu, egg, pancake sausage and salad!
Shaved Ice and sweet beans!

The above is a traditional refreshing food, with beans and soy curds. It’s strange to me that beans are sweet but it works.

Above are oodles of noodles, soups and meat dishes and the various meals we have sampled.

Next…. Tainan and a boat trip,!
