Bolivia 6 – The Watering Hole and the Hide

I felt much better in the morning, the hives and the bites had subsided. If anything Jaynes looked worse but she was stoic. We set off on our last day to a watering hole where we could sit in the shade and watch whatever came to drink. There were some white cattle resting in the trees with their obligatory water buffalo minder who seemed to be enjoying the Caymen (tiny ones) infested water.

We actually had a nice morning, watching red brocket deer and another deer I cannot remember the name of coming to drink, along with Agouti. We saw bright red dragon flies and a myriad of birds including chevron parakeets. A Tayra, a kind of polecat also was hovering  in the scrubland.

On our way to the water hole we passed a dead cow and initially there were a few vultures around it. Duston said they were unlikely to touch it for 24 hours because it had died of a snakebite.

We arranged to come back after lunch to set up a hide and watch what came to feast.

The guides set up the Hide and gave us a radio, then they walked back towards their truck a little way off.

I warn you the picture might be distressing, the cow was either in calf or started to calve due to pain.

Jayne takes me to all the best places! Good views and fragrant!

Unfortunately I don’t think the vultures thought it ready because we didn’t see one! We did however see another cow come and inspect it, it was very touching.

One the way back we got to meet a crab eating fox, that had been rescued by some cowboys after it was found after they dug out a ditch.

After lunch we packed up, I managed to speak to Duston privately, he seemed horribly embarrassed by what had happened. He couldn’t seem to explain his gung ho attitude. There was so much to like about the place but that one thing really soured it for us. I told him he would get an honest review.

We headed back to Santa Cruz with Jorge who allowed us to stop for more animals and birds. One place had egrets in the trees, it looked sort of Christmasy like candles!

Coatis, bad picture but its the only one I could get because they are so swift.

We saw a Coatis on the way back too!
