Melbourne

I arrived in Melbourne in the morning of the 2nd March, after a very long and interrupted flight (due to weather in Dubai).

I was exhausted and for some reason my knees ached. I had a short sleep in my hotel, then wandered into downtown Melbourne. The town was stiflingly hot, even the breeze was hot and I was dehydrated.

In my sleep deprived trance, I ended up getting very lost in a huge shopping mall. I hate shopping so this was something of a nightmare, trapped in a world of the beautiful people in their pristine lives!

I only went in because it was cool!

Anyway after eating noodle soup and drinking nearly a litre of water I felt a little less dazed escaped back to my hotel to try and sleep.

The following day after about three hours sleep, (not helped by all the water I drank!) I decided I had better see something of interest in my half day left in Melbourne so I stumbled upon, guess what? (Oh the irony) Old Melbourne Gaol and City Watch House Museum. In the latter you get a taste of being arrested! If you know me you’ll understand why I found that so amusing!

The place was so horrid I just had to take a picture of the police cell loo, the cells were last used in 1994 which is why it has a stainless steel bowl. The cell was shared by three people! How times gave changed!

In the Gaol it was very grim and but lots of details about the inmates, the bad and the desperate including Ned Kelly who was hung there.

I loved the fact you could be punished for misconduct in a cell for whistling!

Perhaps because I was a bit more awake I noticed my first birds, Mynahs mostly and feral pigeons.

Anyway the sooner get out of the City the better! Tasmania next and I’m so looking forward to it.

  1. This reminds me of Wicklow Gaol, the cells had the names of some of the people who were transported from Ireland to Australia. I am wondering if Ned Kelly’s Dad was transported from Wicklow Gaol?
